Case Studies

Generating web site news and rss feed

read the pdf

This article will describe the use of Compendium-TA and the internal scripts and processes we used at Compendium Developments for creating all the news information on this site.

The news at Compendium Developments was divided into a number of categories. The most recent items from the WebWatch category were shown on the front page, all other items were stored in category archives and an rss feed was generated for all the most recent items across all categories.

This document is supported by the entity definition files used, and all mentioned scripts. You should feel free to customise any of these for your own use, or use the supplied files directly.

Download Example Database

The Example Database as a self extracting zip. This is the database that we use use to track Compendium-TA development and is as good a way as any to see how to use the program.

Dependencies

This program requires a number of files which most target users of this software will already have installed on their system. They have not been included in most of the setup files in order to keep the size of the download to an acceptable level and minimise version incompatibilities between operating system versions.

These dependencies are:

Visual Basic 6.0 service pack 5 runtimes:

If the system does not run at all once it is installed then you need to download these from microsoft directly (Q290887)

MDAC:

The system will test for the installation of this, and prompt you if it is not installed and you can download them from clicking on the link provided in the application or from microsoft directly www.microsoft.com/data

JET:

The system will test for the installation of this and prompt you if it is not found. Jet can be downloaded directly from microsoft. (kb:271908)

DCOM:

The system will test for the installation of these, prompt you if they are not found and provide a button which will take you to the download location, alternatively you can download them from microsoft directly.

Microsoft Scripting:

The reporting and macro parts of Compendium-TA rely on Microsoft Scripting technology this is installed with later versions of Internet Explorer but if you find the reporting functionality missing then you need to install it and can get the install from www.microsoft.com/scripting

Examples which illustrate how to use the system.
